This online presence is a tribute to the memory of Professor Dr Régis Machart, Docent in Intercultural Education at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and Senior Lecturer of modern languages at the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia. He was also associate editor of the International Journal of Bias, Identity and Diversities in Education (IJBIDE).

A zealous educator and researcher, and a prolific writer and editor, Dr Machart was highly respected by his peers and students. He was also an avid global traveller and photographer. Dr Machart passed away on Sunday, 18th September 2016.

May his memory be eternal.

Cette présence en ligne est un hommage à la mémoire du professeur docteur Régis Machart, professeur d'Études Interculturelles à l'université d'Helsinki, en Finlande et maître de conférences de langues modernes à la faculté de langues modernes et communication, à l'université Putra Malaysia (UPM). Il était aussi le rédacteur adjoint de la revue IJBIDE (International Journal of Bias, Identity and Diversities in Education).

Fervent professeur et chercheur, redacteur et écrivain prolifique, Dr Machart était très respecté parmi ses pairs et ses étudiants. Il etait aussi passionné par les voyages et la photographie.

Cultural Essentialism in Intercultural Relations

The concept of culture has long been criticized, with many scholars reformulating it or discarding it entirely. The field of intercultural communication and relations, however, still relies on culture to examine interculturality and this volume provides a comprehensive examination of the problems that the concept poses today.

Intercultural Masquerade: New Orientalism, New Occidentalism, Old Exoticism

This volume revisits the notions of Orientalism, Occidentalism and, to a certain extent, Reverse Orientalism/Occidentalism in the 21st century, adopting post-modern, constructionist and potentially non-essentialising approaches. The representations of the ‘cultural Other’ in education, literature and the arts are examined by scholars working in Australia, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the USA. The New Politics of Global Academic Mobility and Migration

This book brings together recent research on Global Academic Mobility and Migration (GAMM) from a variety of perspectives and contexts. There is now a widespread consensus that most countries and world regions are witnessing GAMM. Bringing together leading scholars from Australasia and Europe, this volume offers readers detailed account of the new politics of such acts of mobility and migration. The following key issues are dealt with: mobility determinants, social injustice, management and administrative problems, as well as teaching–learning challenges. Intersecting Identities and Interculturality Discourse and Practice

Most scholars now refute the monolithic, static definition of identity and adopt a fluid approach to the concept which takes into consideration overlapping, or rather intersecting the different facets of identity. The contact of many and varied aspects of identity finds its full development in interpersonal communication when two or more individuals identify through their discourse. In this volume the authors are interested in identity in intercultural contexts. Interculturality is understood as interculturality without culture (Dervin 2010), not only focusing on cultural differences but expanding to gender, occupation, social class, etc. The contributors in this book consider that the different components/aspects of one's identity are not necessarily opposed to each other, that someone's identity is not pre-determined and that different voices can be heard from within a given group. With contributions from Finland, Japan, Malaysia, Romania, the United Kingdom and the United States of America from the fields of linguistics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, linguistic anthropology, cultural anthropology, literature and education, the key concepts associated with identity and interculturality are revisited, and empirical research provides an insight on identification processes. This volume will appeal to scholars interested in the questions of identity and intercultural relations, as well as to students, particularly from the fields of anthropology, education, language and communication studies who try to better understand the discursive interactions between two people. It will also interest individuals from all walks of life who are keen on knowing more about personal diversities.
